Methods of research - books, journals, reference and books

Methods of research

Books:

Book 1 - Producing and Directing the Short Film and Video by Peter Rea, David K, Irving
- In the book I am researching I have come across a paragraph labelled "Do Your Research". Within this paragraph it shows the importance in how you fund your short film. It mentions how other short film companies have come across funding their short films. To be precise Rea et al states that, "the internet has proved helpful through crowd funding platforms such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo". Rea et al also mention how the short film companies have managed their budget/ income: "Since the launch of Kickstarter in 2009, 5.7 million people have pledged $994 million, funding 56,000 creative projects" (P.37,2015). This would be useful to short film producers as they don't have a budget to work with or the backing of a major studio like featured films do.

Book 2 - Writing the Short Film by Patricia Cooper, Ken Dancyger
- In this book I am researching, I have found a paragraph which is labelled "The importance of Research". Within the paragraph it shows that in order to be successful you must be able to have a clear understanding of the craft of writing but as well as that be a student of human behavior. This is mentioned within the book by Cooper et al who state, "It should be clear by this point that the writer not only must have a clear understanding of the craft of writing, but also should be a student of human behavior." (P.N/a,2012) This information clearly shows the importance in how deep you must look to unravel the relevant information at which a short film producer could potentially need to acquire. This is relevant to how short film producers would have to dig deep to find the information they need.

Book 3 - Swimming Upstream: A Lifesaving Guide to Short Film Distribution By Sharon Badal
- Within this book I found Sharon Badal had mentioned the best way in which to research a short film supposedly. Sharon Badal had states that "The best way to research film festivals is to look at these two sites: www.filmfestivals.com, an English-speaking company based in Paris, andwww.withoutabox.com, an American company with a subsidiary office in London." (P.79,2012) This information shows the importance in secondary research when coming down to researching short films. With the information at which Sharon Badal has shared the creation of a short film would become easier, due to having the appropriate information at which is needed. This is relevant to how short film producers would need information on what is needed in the creation of short films.

Internet - https://shortofstories.wordpress.com/2012/12/21/writing-a-short-film-research/

The internet shares a ton of secondary research about forms of creating short films and how they are written etc. Shortofstories was one of the webpages at which I came across while researching short films. Within the webpage the writer shares details about short films in different ways. The writer continues to mention how important researching important information is and how much time you should put into research. The writer states "I can’t reinforce properly how important a decent research is, because the opposite may put your film down instantly. Why? Plausibility. This is the reason why you should develop your research and your characters with the same effort as if you were writing a feature film." This generally shows how your short film could go if you don't put time and effort into your short film. This evidence is useful for short film producers due to it showing the importance of it all.

Forums - http://www.filmmakerforum.org/general-discussion/6142-tips-for-writing-an-interrogation-short.html  Tips: (think about why a forum would be a good way to research ideas for short films. Use examples from a site such as this. Also remember to state the nature and purpose of forums.)

The use of forums allows you to gather the information you need for free. Also when asking questions you get a new and updated answer for example IndieMovieMaker stated "What I have in mind is a gangster-like character (someone who has a lot of control in a town) has captured one of his "minions" and is interrogating him because he did something wrong. That is all I have so far." (2015) With websites such as this people can receive the help they needed, for free. This is a good and intriguing way for short film producers to gather information and fresh ideas on new short films. This is also a fast and effective way in gathering information. Also a good thing about using a forum is that you can always rely on receiving an answer, as I looked through the forum I had noticed many questions we're answered seriously. The purpose of a forum is for people to connect with minded people who are like them. Why not use this in your benefits as a producer.

Journals - http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/intellect/sfs/2014/00000004/00000001
Tips: (how might an aspiring short film producer benefit from specialist short film journals?)

With journals you can see a vast amount of different story lines/ abstracts. This is good to relate to your own short films but only to see the differences to make it stand out from the rest. Jacques Lefebvre-Linetzky states her abstract "The trunk the traveler drags along is shown in a variety of powerful shots as he makes his way uphill. It conjures up two familiar myths: Sisyphus and Pandora’s box, which provide interesting clues regarding the symbolic significance of such a voyage." (2014) The use of journals can relate to the use of forums, short film producers can take advantage and see other short films to then relate in some sort of way to get a short film idea, but surely noticing they cannot do the same due to copyright. Also this can be a cheap and highly effective way of researching ideas for short films.
